Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it.The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Contact forms

When visitors contact me via the contact form on the site we collect the data shown in the form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

Email subscribers

Details of email subscribers are collected via the third party subscriber manager, MailChimp. Subscriber data is transferred to MailChimp servers in the United States. See the MailChimp Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

Emails sent may be used for advertising purposes. All newsletters sent may contain tracking pixels. The pixel is embedded in emails and allows an analysis of the success of online marketing campaigns. Because of these tracking pixels, we may see if and when you open an email and which links within the email you click. Also, this allows us to adapt the content of future newsletters to the interests of the user. This behaviour will not be passed on to third parties.

To improve your experience on our site, we may use ‘cookies’. A cookie is a small text file that our site may place on your computer as a tool to remember your preferences. Who we share your data with

Analytics data is processed through both the Jetpack plugin for WordPress and Google Analytics.  Some general analytics from this website may be shared with third parties, such as partners or potential partners of The Wandering Linguist. However, in this case any identifying information would not be included.

Subscriber data is processed with MailChimp and the data sent to their servers in the United States. This data is not shared with any other third parties.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

What rights you have over your data

You can opt out of email communications by following a link in the email.

If you have left comments on this website or subscribed, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we amend or erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
